Postgraduate Research fees for 2025 to 2026

The full list of postgraduate research fees for new students enrolling at Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ for the first time in the 2025 to 2026 academic year.

These fees are for new postgraduate research students starting in the 2025-26Ìýacademic year.ÌýUnless otherwise stated, the published fees areÌýfor Year 1 only and yourÌýfees in subsequent yearsÌýmay increase by up to 5% to reflect increasedÌýoperational costs, market forces and inflation.

The academic year for Postgraduate Research students now starts on 01 October. This should not impact on fees or studentships. If you are concerned, please contact Student Fees.

Jointly delivered programmes

Where Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ jointly delivers aÌýprogrammeÌýwith other universities or colleges, the fees may be set by the collaborating institution. Where possible, relevant fee information will be included here.

Non-Resident PhD Programmes

A deduction of £1,500 from full-timeÌýfees and £750 from part-timeÌýfees will apply. This applies to both UKÌýand Overseas students.

Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ leave

Fees for Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Leave during a Research Degree will be charged at half the full-time or part-time UKÌýfee, depending on yourÌýregistration status.Ìý

Additional Fee Element

A minority of PhD students may have to pay an Additional Fee Element (AFE), also known as a bench fees. The AFE covers additional costs which are not included in the published tuition fee, such as consumables, equipment, materials and other items, but it doesn'tÌýinclude visa costs.ÌýAs each PhD is unique, your AFE will be specifically calculated by yourÌýsupervisor. Please contact your supervisor directly for guidance.ÌýYour offer letter willÌýconfirmÌýany AFE you will be required to pay.

There are five bands for AFE charges:

  • Band 1 is £1,000
  • Band 2 is £2,500
  • Band 3 is £5,000
  • Band 4 is £10,000
  • Band 5 is for variable amounts above £10,000
