Our approach to Prevent

We have adopted a proportionate and risk based approach to the Prevent Duty which covers welfare, events, training and partnerships.

Welfare

Any concerns about a student, whatever their nature, go through theÌýStudent of Concern process.Ìý This process removes the pressure on a member of staff to try to work out whether their concern is Prevent related or perhaps connected to other vulnerabilities. It also enables staff to provide the right kind of support to students.Ìý

Event Management

The Prevent Lead works closely with colleagues in Room Bookings andÌýStudents’ Union Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ to mitigate risk around events and ensure that wherever possible events with external speakers go ahead.

The Code of Practice on Freedom of Speech, Procedure for Managing Events with External Speakers and Code of Conduct for Visitors are key documents for event management at Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾. The Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023Ìýmakes legislative changes in relation to freedom of speech and academic freedom in higher education institutions and in students' unions and Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ will review the codes and procedures mentioned above and update these pages.Ìý

Training

All staff at Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ (including honorary staff and PhD students) are required to complete the mandatory PreventÌýE-learning course. This ensures all staff at Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ have an awareness of the Prevent Duty and receive guidanceÌýto help support vulnerable students.Ìý

Collaboration and Partnership

The Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Prevent Network meets twice a year to review and agree upon the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ response to the Duty. It comprises of a wide range of colleagues from across Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾. The Prevent Network monitors risk across all areas of the Prevent Duty through the completion of a risk assessment and action plan which are reviewed on a bi-annual basis. Colleagues from across Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ are involved with the completion of the assessment and action plan and these are approved by the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Prevent Network.
