Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Health of the Public Internal Launch Event

On 8 September 2020, we hosted a virtual event to celebrate the launch of Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Health of the Public, a major new strategic initiative supported by the Provost.

At Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Health of the Public (UHoP), we want to bring the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ community together to tackle public health challenges from every angle and the launch event was a great opportunity to share our vision.

The launch was a celebration of public health research and showcased the breadth of multidisciplinary research and education at Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ with relevance to the health of the public. The event was also an opportunity to launch the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Health of the Public Small Grants Scheme and the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Health of the Public Communities.

Programme

We began with an introduction by Prof Michael Arthur (Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ President & Provost), Prof Dame Anne Johnson and Prof Graham Hart (UHoPÌýCo-Directors) who spoke about Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ and UHoP's commitment to cross-disciplinary collaborations and research.

Research Showcase

In this session, Chaired by Prof Christoph Lindner (Dean, The Bartlett) we heard seven short 4-minute presentations from early and mid-career to well-established researchers communicating exciting cross-disciplinary health of the public research from across the university.

Speakers included: Dr Lena Ciric (Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering), Dr Ian Hamilton (Energy Institute), Professor Imran Rasul (Department of Economics), Dr Gillian Stokes (IOE), Dr Robert Aldridge (Institute of Health Informatics), Dr Daisy Fancourt (Institute of Epidemiology & Health Care), Prof Ama de-Graft Aikins (Institute of Advanced Studies).

Getting Involved

In this session, Chaired by Prof Becky ShipleyÌý(Director, Institute of Healthcare Engineering), Prof Dame Anne Johnson launched two excitingÌýUHoPÌýinitiatives: the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Health of the Public Small Grants Scheme and the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Health of the Public Communities. We also heard from Mike Rowson (Vice-Dean Education, Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Faculty of Population Health Sciences) who provided an overview of the School’s proposed educational offer. Dr Dorina Cadar (Co-Chair, UHoP Early Careers Network) also presented in this session andÌýgaveÌýan overview of the UHoP Early Careers Network.

Virtual networking

The event ended with a virtual networking session on Remo.ÌýThis session gave attendees theÌýopportunity to network informally with colleagues from across Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾. Each virtual table was facilitated by a member of the working group, who asked a series ofÌý‘icebreaker questions’ to lead the discussions.
