Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ to host ‘Hope the Lego Suffragette’ from the House of Commons

From 14 February to 7 March 2022, the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Student Centre will host ‘Hope the Lego Suffragette’, a life-size Lego figure created to help tell the story of women’s suffrage and inequalities.

A 5ft6 suffragette figure made entirely of Lego is set to go on display at Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾Ìýin the run up to International Women’s Day 2022.

Built from more thanÌý32,300 individual pieces, Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ staff, students and the public will be able to visit Hope in the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Student Centre, along with an exhibition curated by Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Special Collections.

Several public events will take place to mark Hope’s visit to Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾, including an event previewing the launch of the City of Women London map led by Dr Leah Lovett (the Bartlett), a Lunch Hour Lecture on Covid-19 and gender inequalities from Dr Bożena Wielgoszewska (Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ IOE), and a panel discussion hosted by Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøվ’s Pro-Provost (Equity and Inclusion) Professor Sasha Roseneil on feminism and citizenship.

Hope’s display at Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ aims toÌýinspireÌýreflection on the history of the suffrage movement,Ìýcreate a space for difficult conversations andÌýuntold stories - and for Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ academics to share their research on gender inequalities.

To do so, Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ is launching a campaign 'Stand with Hope',Ìýencouraging peopleÌýto take photos of themselves with HopeÌýand generate discussion around how we can collectively take steps to tackle the gender inequity still present today – as well as structural inequalities in society more broadly.

Visit Hope in the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Student Centre and join the conversation on social media from 14 February, using the hashtag #StandwithHope.

Hope’s visit is a collaboration between Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ RIGE (Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Grand Challenges, Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Public Policy and Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Library Services), Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Student Centre and the Pro-Provost (Equity & Inclusion), with support from CAM. Hope is on loan from the House of Commons.
