One World Week: 1-5 March

Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Union is running a thought-provoking series of events 1-5 March to celebrate diversity and enhance the sense of community on campus.

One World Week at Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ is designed to give students the chance to share cultures in a fun and inspiring way. Event highlights are below.

Culture@Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ exhibition: 1- 26 March

An exhibition of the winning entries in Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾U's Culture@Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ photography competition. The competition asked Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ students to submit photos illustrating what culture on the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ campus means to them.

Print Room Cafe, Monday to Friday, 8am to 9pm, free entry

This House would cut aid to Africa: 1 March

Is aid the best route to solving Africa's problem? Should our focus be on trade instead? Is Sweden right to seek to suspend aid to countries that seek the death penalty for homosexuals?

With expert speakers and a social afterwards, organised by Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Debating Society.

Gustave Tuck Lecture Theatre, 7-9pm, free entry

One World Fayre: 2 March

Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Union provides the opportunity to stimulate your mind, body and soul. Free food tasting, thought-provoking exhibitions, myth-busting and more.With participation from Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾U Clubs and Societies, ÌýÂ鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ departments and various local and national organisations.

South Cloisters, Wilkins Building, 12-2pm, free

World Wide Words: 2 March

Explore literature from around the world with the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾U Book Club and Young Writers Society. Prose and poetry recitals and readings, book reviews and discussions.

Dent Room, Huntley Street, from 7pm, £3. All profit will be donated to Age Concern

AIESEC Global Village: 3 March

Through Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾U AIESEC Society, the world's largest student organisation invites you to visit stalls representing different countries sharing their national foods, music, cultures and arts, as well as a global fashion show featuring national costumes

Wilkins Old Refectory, 6-10pm, free entry

Culture Rave: 5 March

A multicultural night at Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾, hosted by Taste of the Worl, Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ representatives in the Ernst & Young Profitunity! competition. DJs will play the very best tracks from around the globe, mixing the nerve-pumping energy of modern beats and the essence of their respective culture. Try out the temporary tattoo artist, face painters and henna artists and street snacks Calcutta- and Bangkok-style.

Easy J's, 7-11pm, £5 at the . All money raised will be donated to the Prince's Trust Charity, which helps young disadvantaged people across the UK.

The Culture@Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ competition entries highlighted on the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ homepage this week are:

  • 'Josh's Accordion' by James Skuse (Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Chemistry). "A photo of Josh Elliot, member of The Joker and the Thief, a Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ band taking part in the 2009 Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾U Battle of the Bands final. The band went on to win the competition, which is organised by Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾U Live Music Society in association with Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Friends of MSF."
  • 'Beyond Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Campus' by Beth Turner (Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Anthropology). "As part of a continuing working relationship with Mikwano Children's Trust Uganda, Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾U Netball Club donated our old Netball dresses to the charity, who took them across in January. The reception they received when donated to young girls at an orphanage who have no personal possessions pf their own was amazing. The girls all wanted one and are shown in the photo proudly displaying their new dresses."
  • 'When it snows' by Helen Huang (Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Laws). "Culture at Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ is very much about people. Taken in the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ main quad, this photo demonstrates the playful side of students during an unexpected snowfall last year. It represents a culture at Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ that is both lively and dynamic at the same time, regardless of season or circumstance."
  • 'Object Retrieval' by Magdalena Nieduzak (Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Italian). "Object Retrieval bus during the project set up by the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Museums and Collections with Joshua Sefaer in October 2009."
  • 'I Connect' by Kaja Scheliga (Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Computer Science). "A group of friends from across the world."
