Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾

Mr Stoltenberg's address argued that achieving Millennium Development Goal 4 - a two-thirds reduction in child mortality by 2015 - was feasible, though it was the most ambitious goal the world community had ever set itself, and progress to date had been mixed.

The lecture was introduced by Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ President and Provost Professor Malcolm Grant and Dr Richard Horton, Editor of 'The Lancet', and was followed by a discussion with expert panellists from around the world.

Earlier in the day, the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Centre for International Health & Development (Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ CIHD) was launched at a symposium, 'Child Survival - Challenges to Reach Millennium Development Goal 4'.

The Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ CIHD is an interdisciplinary collaboration of leading academics working on health and development in a global context, based at the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Institute of Child Health. Its research themes include maternal and newborn health, nutrition, children in difficult circumstances, child development and disability, HIV prevention and treatment, and evaluation of community interventions for policy and practice.

The Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ CIHD also incorporates the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ IHMEC, which has played a leading role in introducing international health to the undergraduate medical curriculum, and for the last five years has coordinated an intercalated BSc in International Health at Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾.
