Our very own director Marc-Olivier Coppens represented the Centre for Nature Inspired Engineering (CNIE) on 9 February 2021 at the in a UKRI Session on the "Future of Cities: Green Buildings and Sustainable Infrastructure", responding to presentations and discussing with other academics working in archtitecture and urban planning, like Rachel Armstrong (Newcastle University), Michael Ramage (University of Cambridge), Jaideep Gupte (University of Sussex), on topics varying from living architecture, dynamic ecosystems, urbanplanning, sustainable infrastructure in developing countries, and the remarkable opportunities to use timber in tall buildings.

To address sustainability goals, future cities and infrastructure need to be re-thought, finding a better balance with nature. Inspiration could be drawn from nature's methodologies, its own ecosystems and circularity, where every resource is reused, but, with adaptation to the context of societal needs (locally and globally). This may not happen without vision, behavioural and policy changes that encourage this.
