Reading difficulties affect individuals’ academic and life chances. It is therefore important to understand the underlying causes, in order to provide effective intervention and teaching. The module covers theories from cognitive psychology that describe the components of reading and spelling and the development of literacy skills in diverse languages. It covers weaknesses in cognitive and linguistic processes that can lead to problems with reading and spelling. Finally, we cover methods of assessment and intervention for literacy difficulties, and ways of evaluating these. Ìý
