The module is optional for students on the Applied Medical Sciences (AMS) course and courses which share the first year of AMS. Numbers are limited to 20. If more apply, preference will be given to AMS students. Although this is a first-year course, students must have a basic grounding in physiology and cell/molecular biology.

Description

Principles of Pathological Sciences will give you a detailed introduction to the screening and diagnostic procedures used in the healthcare setting for a number of common diseases or disorders, including obesity-related diseases, cancer, various infections and trauma. After taking the module, you should come away with a detailed understanding of the molecular nature of key diagnostic tests, and how they are interpreted and used to inform clinical practice. You will also gain a basic understanding of the processes and procedures underlying two specific consequences of some deaths in the UK: organ donation and the Coroner's Court.

The teaching in this module is a blend of flipped online learning, small-group tutorials and master-classes from experts. You will have two session in the Royal Free Pathology Museum examining specimens, undergo two lab practicals, one on histology and the other on blood groups, and take a field trip to see an live inquest in a London Coroner's Court. You will also gain critical thinking skills and experience in the art of differential diagnosis, and be able to practice your debating and presentation skills.
