Description

ANAT0001 is an introductory module in human anatomy and developmental biology (embryology). It will cover topographical anatomy and development of the nervous system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, digestive system, musculoskeletal system, urogenital system, head and face, and limbs. It will also provide an understanding of the basic principles of embryonic development and the formation of the major organs.

This module will prepare you for more advanced modules in anatomy and developmental biology that you may wish to pursue in the 2nd year. These include the two Human Anatomy and Embryology modules (ANAT0005ÌýThorax, Abdomen and Pelvis and ANAT0006 Head and Limbs) and BIOL0013 (The Biology of Development). The module will be taught by lectures and a series of seminars covering more specialised research topics.

At the end of the module, you will be expected to be able to:

  • describe the principal structures of major human organs and systems;
  • discuss the anatomical basis of the circulation and the nervous system;
  • discuss the anatomical basis for actions such as breathing and digestion;
  • describe the rudiments of embryonic development and the formation of the major organ systems.

Indicative lecture list (based on previous years' syllabus):
