Description

This module will provide you with an introduction to the global policy making process in a humanitarian context and will help develop practical communication skills in policy messaging (spoken and written). The module will cover major global policy frameworks such as the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals and UN Conventions and Agreements such as the Human Rights Act, the Istanbul Convention, the Hague Convention, as well as the Global Compact for Migration. We will look at how certain countries have incorporated or struggled to incorporate these global policy frameworks into their national policy. Using real world examples, guest lectures, and case studies, students will step into diverse humanitarian crisis situations to fully appreciate the complexity of turning policy making into practice such as in the context of climate change, natural hazards, the COVID-19 pandemic, and gender-based violence including domestic abuse legislations.
