Description
Students in the MSc Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology undertake a substantial research project in the field of applied infectious disease epidemiology under the supervision of a Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ academic. The project may cover the following dissertation types
- Primary data collection using quantitative or qualitative methods
- Secondary data analysis using open access data sets, surveillance data or data held by their supervisors
- Secondary data analysis in the area of molecular epidemiology and ‘omics
- Reviews of the literature using methods relevant to the discipline (e.g. systematic reviews)
The learning outcomes for this project are to:
- gain practical knowledge of approaches to real problems in population health that relate to infections, including an understanding of the application of modern advances in infectious disease epidemiology.
- learn how to critically appraise existing knowledge to define a research question.
- learn how to apply the research methods and epidemiological skills they have learnt to tackle a specific problem and they will learn to implement a plan within a specific time scale.
- learn to synthesise their findings and present them in a way that is appropriate to the audience.
- address the ethical issues raised by research and understand some of the key elements of public engagement and pathways to impact.
