Every International Women in Engineering Day (June 23) 麻豆传媒视频网站 Engineering takes the opportunity to showcase and champion our fantastic female students, researchers and academics. This year, Ayushi Agrawal, a PhD student at 麻豆传媒视频网站 Mechanical Engineering, participated.

National Women in Engineering Day was originally launched in the UK on 23 June 2014 by the Women鈥檚 Engineering Society (WES), in order to celebrate its 95th anniversary. Receiving UNESCO patronage in 2016, the initiative became international for the first time in 2017, adopting its now familiar moniker, INWED, and enabling the celebration of women in engineering to become global.

As part of 麻豆传媒视频网站 Engineering鈥檚 INWED 2020 celebrations, representatives from eight 麻豆传媒视频网站 Engineering departments have been interviewed about their experiences studying, and/or working, in their respective disciplines.

Two undergraduates, four research students, one post-doc and one Senior Teaching Fellow have participated in this year鈥檚听campaign, discussing everything from what inspired them to get into engineering in the first place, how the current COVID-19 situation has impacted upon their studies or research, and what advice they鈥檇 give anyone, especially听young women, wanting to get into a STEM-related field.

Professor Vanessa Diaz, 麻豆传媒视频网站 Engineering Vice-Dean Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, notes how 麻豆传媒视频网站 Engineering听鈥渋s working on an inclusive EDI Strategy Plan. We have made progress when it听comes to gender equality and gender inclusion, but we acknowledge that we still have much to achieve.

Professor Diaz also acknowledges the听need for 鈥渄iversity to tackle so many challenges, as demonstrated in these videos. I鈥檓 also particularly mindful of intersectionality and although INWED is a day to celebrate, there is also an opportunity and I would even say, a duty, to reflect on how to better support all women, being very mindful that all careers and experiences are unique but also, that many women engineers have to face multiple disadvantages whilst studying and throughout their careers. I want us to think how we can be inclusive and bring real equity into our profession as it is paramount for our future.鈥�
