Visualising hazard and risk

To improve the visualisation of risk for decision makers during disaster scenarios

Visualising hazard and risk
The Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾HC secured funding through the NERC (National Environment Research Council)ÌýPURE (Probability, Uncertainty and Risk in the Environment) programme, to improve the visualisation of risk for decision makers during disaster scenarios. This was a collaboration between researchers at Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾,Ìý²¹²Ô»åÌý, which aimed to make this project relevant to both the NGO (non-governmental organisation) community and commercial sector. The project madeÌýuse ofÌý, an online program developed by Aon Benfield, which examined the exposure of population and vulnerability datasets in response to hazard footprints. It thus provided a quick and simple mechanism for portraying risk, both in terms of anticipating an event or responding during a crisis. The project focused on flooding in Cambodia, where an assessment of available datasets has lead to a greater understanding of the data required to use this technique, and lead to the creation of recommendations for using this methodology.
