The Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ Technical Staff Showcase event was held in the Cloisters on Thursday 30th March 2023 between 11:00 am to 4:30 pm. The Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ President & Provost Dr Michael Spence – opened the event at 11:00 am and the exhibition continued in the South and North Cloisters until 4.30 pm.

The event demonstrated the breadth and depth of technical contribution that our technical staff makes to Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ research, teaching, and innovation, and to show that technical careers are rewarding and recognised by Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾. It provided an opportunity for all staff including academic staff, professional services staff, technical staff, etc. to connect directly with the Â鶹´«Ã½ÊÓƵÍøÕ¾ technical community, and celebrate the contribution that they also made during the pandemic. The showcase delivered an exhibition in the North and South Cloisters, and a programme of talks in the Jeremy Bentham room.

Earth Sciences carries out world-class research and teaching to understand how our planet works across diverse, multidisciplinary fields that ranges from understanding earth materials at the atomic level, through the geological processes that drive volcanoes and earthquakes.
This is enabled by our technical staff who are experts in their field and who possess a wide range of skill sets across three broad areas (below) that have been further adapted into specialising them to Earth Sciences’ research laboratories:

  • Geology (Rock sample preparation, microscopy, laboratory/workshop techniques & management)
  • Engineering (Mechanical, electronics, IT & design)
  • Chemistry (Geochemical laboratory techniques, processes, analytical expertise & management).
